Mormon Missile – Land Speed Legacy

In the elite world of land speed racing, few machines have left a mark like the Mormon Missile. This custom-built streamliner earned its place in history by setting an FIA-certified World Record of 341 mph in 2009 at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats.

At the heart of this record-breaking run was a heavily modified Duramax 6.6L diesel engine—and I had the privilege of playing a key role in its success.

As Assistant Team Lead, I was responsible for ensuring that all critical systems—fuel, oil, water, and onboard ice—were topped off, conditioned, and race-ready before each run. But my contribution went far beyond prep work.

I was directly responsible for the calibration of the Duramax engine, meticulously tuning it for maximum performance under the extreme demands of land speed racing. I also managed the injector specification, manufacturing, testing, and final calibration of the high-pressure diesel injection system—essential for delivering clean, reliable power at over 300 mph.

Classified in BDS (B for engine displacement under 8.0 liters, D for diesel, and S for streamliner), the Mormon Missile was a masterclass in aerodynamic design and mechanical precision.

Record Highlights:

  • Vehicle: Mormon Missile Streamliner
  • Event: Bonneville Salt Flats
  • Speed: 341 mph (FIA-certified)
  • Year: 2009
  • Class: BDS; B Class – under 8.0L / Diesel  / Streamliner
  • Engine: Custom 6.6L Duramax Diesel

My Role:

  • Assistant Team Lead
  • Duramax engine calibration
  • Injector specification, manufacturing, testing, and tuning
  • Pre-run system checks (fuel, oil, coolant, ice)

The Mormon Missile isn’t just a land speed legend—it’s a symbol of engineering excellence, teamwork, and the pursuit of perfection. That same mindset drives every project I take on today.
